Dominic Breazeale had a slow start, but maintained his undefeated record today in a PBC on NBC showcase bout for the American heavyweight prospect, who downed Cuban Yasmany Consuegra with a third round TKO to improve to 15-0 (14 KO).
Breazeale, 29, was getting caught clean with shots in the first round, as Consuegra (17-1, 14 KO) certainly looked the sharper of the two fighters in the opening frame. The second round was fought at a standstill for almost the entire round, before Breazeale clipped Consuegra, 31, with a shot that dropped the Cuban just before the bell, allowing Breazeale to steal the round and an extra point.
But it wouldn't much matter anyway, as Breazeale caught Consuegra again halfway into round three, hurting him with a shot that landed on the back of the head (Consuegra's fault, as he was ducking into the shots), and then a right uppercut that put him on the canvas. The fight was stopped moments later, when Consuegra went down once again on a short right hand inside.
