Vic Darchinyan was game, as always, but once again the blown-up former flyweight star was just not big enough to hold off a featherweight, as Jesus Cuellar dropped and stopped the 39-year-old Darchinyan at 1:04 of round eight.
Darchinyan (40-8-1, 28 KO) came out aggressive and landed some big shots, including some really clean left hands that in his younger days, at lighter weights, turned out a lot of lights against his opponents. But Cuellar (27-1, 21 KO) was just bigger and stronger, able to stand up to Darchinyan's best shots and fire back, wearing Darchinyan down. He stiffened Darchinyan's legs a couple times landing clean shots, including an early counter left hook, and when he dropped Darchinyan in the eighth, it was pretty much over there.
Darchinyan's corner tried to stop the fight, but referee Tom Taylor didn't notice at first. The referee did step in moments later, though, with Darchinyan under pressure again.
The PBC on NBC and NBC Sports broadcast missed the entire second round of this fight, so we didn't score the bout.
