Karim Mayfield admits he was surprised to be in consideration for Mayweather

Now that Andre Berto has officially been selected, Karim Mayfield says that it was surprising to learn he was in the running for Mayweather's 49th fight.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

Now that the Mayweather sweepstakes has ended, Karim Mayfield comes out and admits that it was surprising to learn that he was being considered for Floyd Mayweather's next fight.

"I was certainly surprised due to the fact that I'm not in the top five in the world and I wasn't expecting anything like that," Mayfield exclusively told World Boxing News over the phone on Wednesday.

Yes, a surprise for Karim and pretty much everyone else - which is why many media outlets and fans believed that Mayweather was being facetious when he said he was considering both Berto and Mayfield as potential opponents for his 49th fight. Karim also went on to say that he thinks Mayweather took the easy road by selecting Berto over himself.

"I think Floyd chose the easier opponent, but I'm not saying by any means that Andre Berto is an easy opponent. I just think it will be less of a challenge than it would be with me as I believe Andre Berto will be a cakewalk - a walk in the park."

With this being the general sentiment of the entire boxing public, this fight should prove to be an interesting case study on Mayweather's drawing power. Let's see how many PPV sales this fight will garner.
