Angel Garcia: Danny is ready for top dogs at welterweight

Trainer Angel Garcia evaluates his son's performance against Malignaggi this past weekend while talking future opponents.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

In this interview Angel Garcia says he was more than satisfied with his son's official debut at the welterweight division. So now that the focus has already shifted towards his next potential opponents, reporters ask Angel about potential fights with Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman.

As the script usually goes, Angel says that Al Haymon picks the opponents, he trains Danny, and Danny fights. But one thing he did say was that he believes that Danny is ready for any of the top names in the welterweight division, including both Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman.

A lot has been made of a potential Shawn Porter fight for Garcia after Danny said that Porter has the perfect style for him to beat. Porter didn't take that comment too kindly, obviously, and told Danny to come see him if he really believes what he's talking. Of course none of this banter means all that much because ultimately Al Haymon plays matchmaker. Haymon will pick Garcia's next opponent and, in my view at least, his next choice of opponent for Garcia at 147 will be truly telling as to how highly he views Garcia as a talent. Does he throw him right in there with the big dogs, or does he spoon feed him a fighter who won't have much to offer?

How do you think Garcia fares against a Shawn Porter or Keith Thurman? Who do you want to see Danny Garcia fight next?
