In what was supposed to be a 130-pound tune-up for former titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez, Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico scored a pretty notable upset over his Mexican rival, winning a majority decision on scores of 94-94, 95-93, and 98-90.
BLH's Connor Ruebusch had the fight even at 94-94, while BLH/SB Nation's Scott Christ had it 95-93 for Gonzalez.
Oquendo (26-4, 16 KO) went down in the opening round and it looked as though Gonzalez would have the sort of easy work that most expected, even if it was action packed before the inevitable finish. But Oquendo stormed back in round two, dropping Gonzalez (58-10, 49 KO) hard and evening the score. Gonzalez survived that round, and seemed to come on strong down the stretch in the fight, which featured several accidental head clashes and blood from the faces of both men.
It was a close, competitive, and mostly pretty exciting fight to kick off the Mayweather-Berto pay-per-view, with only one somewhat head-scratching score really worth questioning.
