Lee Selby, who recently won the IBF featherweight title against Evgeny Gradovich and signed with Al Haymon, will be making his first title defense on a PBC undercard. Selby, 28, will be taking on 36-year-old Fernando Montiel on the Devon Alexander vs. Aron Martinez PBC card scheduled for Oct. 14th.
Every time I think of Montiel, I can't help but envision him getting squashed by Nonitio Donaire's left hook and then flailing around on the mat. That was four years ago, and Montiel has fought 11 times since then, going 10-1 in that stretch while fighting on the local Mexican circuit.
Selby, on the other hand, is coming off winning his first major world title and should be brimming with confidence. No doubt many fans will attribute this first title defense to classic Al Haymon matchmaking, and they're not really wrong, but...well...never mind, I can't think of any buts. I'm not sure Montiel really has anything left to offer on the world stage.
How do you like this fight, fans?
