In what can only be described as a fairly lackluster main event, Devon Alexander will face Aron Martinez in the next PBC on ESPN event on October 14, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. That will be a Wednesday night card, so at least it's on a night when we don't usually have any boxing to watch, making it something of a novelty treat.
Alexander (26-3, 14 KO) last fought in December 2014, losing a wide decision to Amir Khan. He's lost two of his last three overall dating back to 2013, when he dropped the IBF welterweight title to Shawn Porter, followed by a win over Jesus Soto Karass.
Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KO) is a capable fringe contender, able to give good fighters some trouble, but will be used here as a tune-up. He was in that role against Robert Guerrero in June, and fought very tough in a split decision loss over 10 rounds. Whether or not that had more to do with Guerrero coming back too fast from a draining loss to Keith Thurman is certainly up for debate. Prior to that fight, Martinez had lost a fifth round TKO to Josesito Lopez, and has lost three of his last four fights.
The show will also feature Lee Selby's IBF featherweight title defense against Fernando Montiel, and will be held in Glendale, Arizona.
