After more than three years out of the ring, Antonio Margarito will make his return on March 5th, two weeks shy of his thirty-eighth birthday, against Jorge Paez, Jr. in Mexico City.
No other fights have been announced for the card.
Margarito (38-8-2, 27 KO) last fought in December of 2011, when Miguel Cotto battered his injured eye for a revenge TKO. Before that, he'd suffered the worst beating of his career courtesy of Manny Pacquiao in 2010. He really hasn't looked good since being caught with plaster in his gloves before his beatdown loss to Shane Mosley and I can't imagine a layoff at this age can change that.
Paez (39-7-2) is 2-3-1 in his last six, losing to Vivian Harris, Jose Benavidez, and Carlos Ocampo. He's a far cry from the likes of Cotto, but he's not awful; he did manage to beat knockout artist Daniel Echeverria last August.
I honestly don't see the point of this. Tony is clearly damaged goods and would get torn apart by the current welterweight and super welterweight crops. Anyone tuning in?
