Lucas Matthysse hasn't fought since getting surprisingly knocked out by Viktor Postol last October. With some time off and his batteries recharged, Matthysse eyes his return to boxing which could happen as soon as March or April. Except when he returns, he might well be moving up to a crowded welterweight division.
"We have a few days to evaluate the situation with the whole team and with Golden Boy Promotions but we're considering the possibility of Lucas reemerging as a welterweight," said promoter Mario Arano, Matthysse's handler, in an official statement. "The boxing market is betting heavily on the 147 pound division and Matthysse could have big opportunities in that division."
There certainly could be a number of intriguing possibilities for Matthysse at welterweight, but there are also a number of questions about him -- like is his heart really in it anymore? I can't imagine that many of us would have ever envisioned seeing Matthysse, the hard man that he is, kneeling on a mat and call it quits. But it happened...
