Another fight, another stoppage in the corner. After Dominic Breazeale opened the PBC on FOX card with a win over Amir Mansour after five rounds, Sammy Vasquez Jr followed up with a stoppage of Aron Martinez after six rounds in their welterweight co-feature, putting himself one step closer to a WBC title shot.
Vasquez (21-0, 15 KO) controlled the fight pretty handily, neutralizing Martinez (20-5-1, 4 KO) and keeping the normally very active battler at bay with his skills, combination punching, and ability to lead the action. Martinez never did get his pressure game going, and as a result was never really in the fight, a disappointing performance for him to be sure. He landed just 35 punches of 176 thrown (20%), compared to 88/309 (28%) from Vasquez.
This was a semifinal eliminator, or whatever they're calling it, in the WBC's non-tournament welterweight title "tournament." Vasquez is now one more win away from a title shot, with that title's vacancy to be filled shortly by the Danny Garcia-Robert Guerrero main event.
The reason for stoppage appeared to be a left hand or arm injury to Martinez.
