Andre Ward has been recently connected to a March fight at Oakland's Oracle Arena against light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera, but that fight isn't set yet, and you may not want to get your hopes up. Ward (28-0, 15 KO), who has fought all of two times since 2012, tweeted about not having a contract for a fight, and says that information was "leaked":
Barrera (17-0, 12 KO) quickly fired back, and took at shot at Ward's new promoters at Roc Nation Sports, too:
The 31-year-old Ward, who was brought over to HBO after a great run at Showtime, has been a bust for his current network. Since signing with HBO in 2012, Ward has fought two times on the network, beating Chad Dawson in 2012 and Edwin Rodriguez in 2013. His last fight, a 2015 tune-up return against Paul Smith, was passed on by the network, and aired as a Roc Nation time-buy on BET.
Barrera, 33, would be an interesting next opponent for Ward, who does have a deal to face Sergey Kovalev in late 2016, and might see the Cuban as too big of a risk ahead of a fight like that, if you want to think of things pessimistically, or maybe the deal just hasn't fully come together yet, but if that's the case, then it doesn't seem particularly smart of Ward to invite further criticism by making anyone think that he even may be considering "ducking" Barrera.
