Tony Bellew makes his first WBC cruiserweight title defense today in Liverpool, as he’ll face American BJ Flores in the main event from Echo Arena, a card also featuring the return of Luke Campbell.
Bellew (27-2-1, 17 KO) put in a thunderous performance in his vacant title win over Junior Makabu in May, stopping his opponent in the third round. He’ll again look to use that power against Flores (32-2-1, 20 KO), who has lost his last two notable fights, and those date back to 2010 when he was defeated by Danny Green.
Campbell (14-1, 11 KO) will be facing veteran Derry Mathews (38-10-2, 20 KO), who is coming off of a loss to WBO lightweight titleholder Terry Flanagan on March 12. The 33-year-old Mathews is a former British, Commonwealth, and interim WBA titleholder, and is a reasonable next step for Campbell, 29, who has beaten Gary Sykes and Argenis Mendez following a loss to Yvan Mendy last December.
Live coverage on UK TV will begin at 1 pm ET on Sky Sports 3, and continue at 3 pm ET on Sky Sports 2.
