Tony Bellew overwhelmed BJ Flores and retained his WBC cruiserweight title today in Liverpool, knocking out the American challenger late in the third round.

Flores was dropped three times in the second round, though under odd circumstances. Flores was clipped with a shot that was low, and turned to referee Ian John-Lewis looking for a call, which did not come. What did, however, was a flurry by Bellew, sensing an opening, and Flores went down the first time. He was still shaken up when dropped the latter two times.

With just under a minute left in round three, it was a hard left hook to the jaw that knocked Flores down once more, ending the fight. Bellew (28-2-1, 18 KO) then stared down David Haye at ringside. Those two have both talked about a potential future fight with one another, and Haye had picked Flores, his friend, to win this fight.

Flores falls to 32-3-1 (20 KO) with the loss.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell improved to 15-1 (12 KO) with a fourth round knockout of battle-tested but always vulnerable veteran Derry Mathews (38-11-2, 20 KO).

Campbell put Mathews down late in the third round, and then twice in the fourth on body shots. It’s the eighth time in his career that Mathews has been stopped, and a solid win for Campbell, who continues to move forward after his 2015 loss to Yvan Mendy.

Ryan Burnett retained his British bantamweight title in an entertaining fight with Ryan Farrag, largely able to outclass his challenger, but never able to simply cruise, as Farrag was there the whole time.

Scores were 117-111, 118-111, and 118-110 for Burnett, who improves to 15-0 (9 KO) with the win, his first defense of the belt he won against Jason Booth last November. Farrag drops to 16-3 (4 KO).
