Bobby Czyz vs Tim Broady
Light Heavyweights, 10 Rounds (January 18, 1985)
The Summit, Houston, TX
New Jersey’s Bobby Czyz was known as “Chappie” and “The Matinee Idol,” a 5’10” light heavyweight battler who debuted in 1980. He comes into this fight 25-1, his only loss to Mustafa Hamsho in 1982, a 10-round decision. Club fighter Broady has a solid looking record at 15-1-1, but is still unproven against quality opposition.
Junior Jones vs Kennedy McKinney
Super Bantamweights, 12 Rounds (December 19, 1997)
Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Jones (44-2) is defending the WBO super bantamweight title against McKinney (32-3-1), a former Olympic gold medalist for the United States in 1988, and a former world titleholder at 122 pounds as well. Jones is riding high, coming into this fight off of back-to-back victories against Marco Antonio Barrera, who was previously undefeated in 43 fights. McKinney has two straight wins over Hector Acero-Sanchez and Luigi Camputaro, not exactly on par with the Barrera victories, and was himself stopped in 12 by Barrera in 1996, before also losing a split decision on the road in South Africa to Vuyani Bungu in April 1997.
Bazooka Limon vs Bobby Chacon IV
Super Featherweights, 15 Rounds (December 11, 1982)
Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA
Regarded largely as the greatest of their four fights, Chacon-Limon IV is a must-see. Usually I try to just set the stage for what the fight is, but seriously, join us this evening and watch this fight with us. Their three previous bouts:
- Chacon def. Limon, SD-10 (1980/03/21)
- Technical draw, 7th round (1979/04/09)
- Limon def. Chacon, UD-10 (1975/12/07)
Chacon (50-6-1) is coming in on a modest five-fight win streak against marginal opposition, following a loss to Cornelius Boza-Edwards. Limon (50-12-2) is defending the WBC 130-pound title here, beating Rolando Navarrete for that belt seven months prior, with a successful defense against Chungll Choi four months after that.
