It still amazes me that Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya can fix his mouth to say some of the things he does, but even that doesn’t stop me from having a laugh. De La Hoya was a guest on ESPN Deportes ‘ESPN Nation’ alongside Bernard Hopkins last week, and when he was asked about Golovkin not liking his flat fee offer to face Canelo Alvarez, here’s what he had to say:
“Golovkin says he’s not about the money. Let’s make the fight for the people, for the public.
“The arrangements can be made, so there is no problem, but you have to make the fight. Look, the one who is running here is Golovkin. Maybe he doesn’t know how much is being offered. So the money is there to make the fight.”
De La Hoya then goes on to inexplicably say that he’s not interested in chasing around Golovkin any longer.
"We are no longer chasing Golovkin and his team. They're playing games, that's all. Canelo will continue his career, he will fight in January or February, depending on the hand, and then go fight in May and September, and hopefully September will be the fight with Golovkin."
