Jessie Magdaleno pulled off at least a mild upset tonight, stepping up big time in class and scoring a unanimous decision victory over Nonito Donaire, winning on scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110 in a very competitive fight.
BLH had the fight 115-114 for Donaire, but with several swing rounds. The 8-4 cards for Magdaleno were perfectly understandable, though 10-2 in his favor was certainly a couple rounds wide.
Donaire (37-4, 24 KO) was certainly slower and a bit more ponderous in his approach than he was as a younger man, but at 33, time catching up to him is natural. He has, however, shown a grittiness in his two recent tough bouts — this one and his win over Cesar Juarez last December — that we didn’t know was there when he was a younger fighter.
Magdaleno (24-0, 17 KO) fought through a bad cut caused by an accidental headbutt, and showed superior speed and just a freshness that Donaire no longer has. This was a tough fight for both guys, and they both proved something tonight. Magdaleno proved he can fight at a world class level, and he takes home the title belt. (Actually, he probably gets mailed a new one later, but you get the meaning.)
How did you score this fight?
