Heavyweight Luis Ortiz and two prospects stayed unbeaten today in Manchester, kicking off the Anthony Joshua-Eric Molina card.
Ortiz (27-0, 23 KO) improved to 2-0 as a Matchroom Boxing fighter, defeating David Allen (9-2-1, 6 KO) in a mismatch. Ortiz, 37, never had any trouble in the fight, but it did stretch out into the seventh round, at which point the Cuban hammered away at Allen until the referee stepped in late in the round.
The hope for Ortiz is a bigger fight in early 2017, but we’ll have to see. Recently, Eddie Hearn said he wanted to match Ortiz with 45-year-old Shannon Briggs, so that’s something.
Welterweight Conor Benn improved to 6-0 (4 KO) with a first round knockout of novice Steven Brackhouse (1-5-1, 1 KO), and middleweight Marcus Morrison went to 14-0 (10 KO) with a six-round points win over Harry Matthews (14-22-2, 2 KO) on a score of 60-55.
