Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take earlier today with everybody’s favorite Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman. During De La Hoya’s segment, Stephen A. wasted little time before directly asking about the fight fans want to see — Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin.

“If Canelo is so ready, why has your last two fights been against Amir Khan and Liam Smith? Are you kidding me?! Come on now!” quipped Smith.

“Yeah, I mean look, Canelo truly is a 54-pounder...He can make the weight with no problem and Canelo and I and the team has decided that for 2017 he will move up to middleweight, full fledged middleweight, and fight the middleweight champions of the world. And that’s including Triple G,” De La Hoya responded.

Then, just before the segment concluded, Stephen A. wanted to be unequivocally clear that De La Hoya was indeed promising boxing fans that a Canelo-GGG fight happens in the upcoming year.

“You have my word and Canelo is not afraid of Triple G. September, we’re hoping he signs the contract and it will happen,” De La Hoya finished.
