It’s looking like it will be a slow road to recovery for Nick Blackwell, with his former trainer Gary Lockett saying Blackwell could be ‘several months’ before he improves. Blackwell was re-hospitalized after an ill-advised sparring session which came just months after suffering a serious brain injury against Chris Eubank Jr.
Once Blackwell emerged from his coma, he announced his retirement from boxing but apparently had a difficult time walking away from the sport at age 26. He then recently jumped back into the ring for a sparring session which proved disastrous as he was forced to go to the hospital and undergo another surgery to relieve swelling on his brain.
Lockett had this to say on the incident:
"I can't believe the boxer he sparred with, and the coach or coaches involved, would ever allow Nick to spar when he's had a brain injury," he said.
"In due course, I hope they are dealt with by the British Boxing Board of Control in the correct manner."
The BBBoC will meet in January to review an investigation into this incident and hope Blackwell is in good enough condition to present his version of events.
