Top lightweight prospect Felix Verdejo will be back in action on February 3, 2017, following his recovery from a motorcycle accident this past August.

Verdejo, 23, is considered one of the world’s top rising talents, promoted heavily by Top Rank, and also seen as perhaps Puerto Rico’s next big star. The island has been looking for the “next” following Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto for some time, with various prospects failing to break through to that upper level.

Verdejo recently has been cleared to train, with Top Rank’s Carl Moretti saying that he will begin sparring soon.

Verdejo (22-0, 15 KO) fought three times in 2016, defeating William Silva and Jose Luis Rodriguez by 10-round decision, and Juan Jose Martinez by fifth round TKO in his last fight, on June 11.

No opponent has been named for Verdejo’s return, but a fairly soft touch would seem likely given the circumstances. The card will air on UniMás’ Solo Boxeo Tecate series.
