Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez have been circling one another in rumor the last month or so, and now it appears as though the talks are getting a bit more serious. ESPN.com reports that Marquez is in real discussions for a fight with Cotto, and that the 42-year-old Mexican star is back to training.
"I talked to Cotto's people and told them about my situation and what I want, and they are willing to cooperate," Marquez said. "It appears that Cotto wants to fight in June and I want to fight in May because two years of inactivity is a very important factor. I have to get on pace with a fight in May and then why not consider a fight with Cotto in September or October?"
Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO) is not yet dead set on a return, saying that he'll see how his body responds to real training. He hasn't fought since a March 2014 win over Mike Alvarado, and underwent knee surgery early last year. He says he won't fight unless he's 100%, and that if he is going to fight in May for a tune-up, he'll announce it in March.
Top Rank says they have a deal with Marquez, but that they haven't had contact with Cotto's camp regarding a fight with Marquez, with Marquez conducting that business himself, however serious it is right now.
