Former middleweight titleholder Sam Soliman is injured and has been forced to withdraw from his March 5 fight with Antoine Douglas, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. The fight was set to air on Showtime as part of a tripleheader from Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania, headlined by Julian Williams vs Marcello Matano.
Douglas (19-0-1, 13 KO) is a 23-year-old prospect who was looking to take a step up against a veteran opponent. Soliman, 42, won the IBF middleweight title in 2014 from Felix Sturm, but lost it in his first defense against Jermain Taylor, four months later. He fought once in 2015, losing a contested split decision against Dominic Wade, who will face Gennady Golovkin on April 23.
For now, Douglas is still set for action on the March 5 card, but if he does fight, he'll be facing someone coming in on two weeks' notice, which probably doesn't bode well for the level of opponent. But there are certainly some veteran names out there who will be available and willing to step in for a chance to fight on Showtime against a top prospect.
