Gary Russell Jr will return to the ring on March 12, part of the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter undercard at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. The card will be televised on CBS, though Russell's fight may not.
Dan Rafael of ESPN.com tweeted that this fight was added to the card, also noting the previously reported Edwin Rodriguez-Thomas Williams Jr fight. The TV co-feature is Abner Mares vs Fernando Montiel in a featherweight clash. Rafael says that Russell-Hyland and Rodriguez-Williams may be televised, and will at least be taped to air if there are early endings in the main fights. Here's hoping there's a spot for these fights on SHO Extreme or CBS Sports Network to air live, because both of them are relevant enough, and Rodriguez-Williams sounds like a three-round slugfest waiting to happen.
Russell (26-1, 15 KO) is the current WBC featherweight titleholder, but hasn't fought since last March, when he knocked out Jhonny Gonzalez in four rounds to win the belt. Hyland (31-1, 15 KO) has a record better on paper than in reality. He may be best known for his loss to Javier Fortuna in 2012, when he was promoted by Snooki, which was part of the Pacquiao-Marquez IV card.
