Last night on HBO Boxing After Dark, Luis Ortiz and Jessie Vargas scored stoppage wins from the DC Armory in Washington, DC, on a Golden Boy/Top Rank co-promotion.
In the main event, heavyweight Luis Ortiz (25-0, 22 KO) put away veteran Tony Thompson (40-7, 27 KO) in the sixth round, dropping the 44-year-old hometown fighter three times -- in the first, third, and sixth rounds. It was pretty much a wipeout win for the big Cuban, who now will likely return May 7 on the Canelo-Khan card, if they can find an opponent to fight him.
In the co-feature, Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KO) stopped Sadam Ali (22-1, 13 KO) in the ninth round to win the vacant WBO welterweight title. Vargas, 26, could now be in line for a rematch later this year with Timothy Bradley Jr, or perhaps some other bigger fight at welterweight. But the Bradley rematch would seem to make the most sense for both fighters and for Top Rank later this year.
Here are the highlights of Vargas' win over Ali:
