Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) will be kicking-off his middleweight title reign when he takes Max Bursak (32-4-1, 15 KOs) at the Copper Box Arena in London on April 30th. Apparently this fight was easier to put together than a title unification bout against fellow middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Saunders is coming off a majority decision win in a close fight against Andy Lee last December, a fight in which he relieved Andy Lee of his WBO middleweight title. Now he'll be taking on Ukrainian veteran Max Bursak, a former European and WBO intercontinental champion,.
"Nothing comes easy in boxing and I'm definitely not taking Bursak for granted. He's a good, good, fighter and very dangerous and if I don't come in 100 percent then he could cause an upset in my first title defence. I've worked long and hard to get where I am and look at the massive fights ahead of me against the likes of Golovkin. So no, I'm going to make sure I'm in perfect shape and give Bursak the toughest night he's ever had, he's never been stopped before so that's something I'm looking at doing," said Saunders.
The undercard bouts for this card will feature Ovill McKenzie facing Dmytro Kucher for the vacant European cruiserweight title as well as Ryan Walsh defending his British featherweight title against James Tennyson.
Tickets for the event are being priced at £30, £40, £60, £80, £100, £150, £200 and are available through Ticketmaster, See Tickets, and Eventim. The televised card will be distributed by BoxNation.
