A press release yesterday announced that middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin has just signed an endorsement deal with Nike's Jordan brand, making him only the third boxer ever to do so (the other two being Andre Ward and Roy Jones Jr.). You can bet Golovkin will be showing off some of his new Jordan swag when he takes on Dominic Wade on April 23rd.
"We are excited to add Gennady to the Jordan Brand family," Jordan Brand president Larry Miller said in a press release. "Gennady's work ethic, dedication to his craft and style make him a perfect fit."
The specific terms of Golovkin's deal with Jordan were no disclosed but it was said that Golovkin would wear Jordan gear and will "work closely with the brand to continue the development of the category." More than likely this just means there will eventually some new iteration of Jordan-branded boxing shoes.
This signing takes place just a couple months after Nike nixed their deal with Manny Pacquiao over his widely condemned comments on homosexuality. But for Golovkin, his American marketing push is now in full swing after already making a surprise appearance in an Apple commercial.
