We recently passed along word of a May 21st Showtime card headlined by a rematch between Erislandy Lara and Vanes Matirosyan and also featuring Jermall Charlo vs. Austin Trout. Said card now has a venue, Las Vegas' Cosmopolitan, and a third title fight: Jermell Charlo vs. John Jackson for the vacant WBC super welterweight title.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. previously held the belt before his retirement, lifting it from Canelo Alvarez in 2014.
Charlo (27-0, 12 KO) isn't anywhere near the destructive entertainer his brother is, but he's done quite well for himself in the 154-pound division. He picked up a decision over the aforementioned Matirosyan in March of 2015, then snapped a four-fight decision streak by mauling Joachim Alcine in six.
Jackson (20-2, 15 KO), son of Julian "The Hawk", packs some real power but has struggled when stepping up. He dropped a decision to Willie Nelson back in 2012, then walked into a right hook from Andy Lee two years later in a fight he was comfortably winning. Charlo should be too slick for him, although that power makes things interesting.
With the addition of this bout, the WBC, IBF, IBO, and WBA Super titles will all be on the line on the same night. Decent card overall, I'd say.
