A unification fight between IBF welterweight titleholder Kell Brook and WBO welterweight titleholder Jessie Vargas is being discussed by their promoters, according to a report at, which quotes both Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and Carl Moretti of Top Rank as saying that each side is interested, and preliminary talks have taken place.

Hearn was in New York and met with Moretti to discuss Brook (36-0, 25 KO) potentially facing Vargas or Timothy Bradley Jr in July or August. Bradley isn't going to return that quickly from his April 9 loss to Manny Pacquiao, but Vargas (27-1, 10 KO) is potentially available.

Hearn says that they'd like to do the fight in the United Kingdom, and they "have a lot of money for Mr. Vargas if he wants to make that happen." Vargas won the vacated WBO title on March 5, stopping previously unbeaten Sadam Ali in the ninth round on HBO.

Brook won the IBF title from Shawn Porter in August 2015, but his title reign has been criticized for soft opposition, as he's faced and easily defeated Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin, and Kevin Bizier. Dan and Bizier were both mandatory challengers.

Top Rank had previously indicated that they were looking to put Vargas on their July 23 pay-per-view.

Errol Spence Jr is also in the mix for an IBF title shot against Brook, but has been ordered to fight a final eliminator against Konstantin Ponomarev first.
