Adrien Broner's fight this past Friday night on Spike delivered record ratings for the PBC series on that network, with 1,013,000 viewers for Broner's fight against Ashley Theophane, and an average of 873,000 viewers for the entire show, including the two undercard fights.
Broner (32-3, 25 KO) won by stoppage in the ninth round, though he had some struggles in the fight, and his immediate future in the sport is a bit cloudy after he surrendered to police in Cincinnati on felony assault charges. After his win over Theophane, he called out Theophane's promoter and Broner's former (?) friend and quasi-mentor, Floyd Mayweather.
We discussed the potential for a Mayweather-Broner fight and its mass appeal on Monday's podcast, and Broner doing a million-plus for a mildly-hyped Friday night fight on Spike argues that it could, indeed, gain a lot of attention and be a big event, if not the most interesting actual fight on paper.
