Anthony Joshua made short work of Charles Martin today at the O2 Arena in London, winning by second round knockoutto lift the IBF heavyweight title, and improve to 16-0, with all 16 wins coming inside the distance.
After a tentative first round, Joshua caught Martin (23-1-1, 21 KO) with a counter right hand that stunned and floored the American. Martin never saw the punch coming, and even though he got up, the fight was pretty much over. He didn't have the needed time to really get his wits back and his legs steadied, and the shot that put him on the canvas was a great one, on the button and out of nowhere.
Joshua followed up with another right hand as soon as the action restarted, putting Martin back on the canvas. Martin waited until the count of nine to get back to his feet, then lightly protested the stoppage, but to no avail. If it had continued on, it seems inevitable that one more shot would have forced the referee to call it off, anyway.
