Former world title challengers and Boxcino winners (if that's a thing we're still acting like matters much) Willie Monroe Jr and John Thompson will square off in a June 11 bout that will air on Showtime Extreme, prior to the live fights that night on Showtime, a card headlined by Ruslan Provodnikov vs John Molina.
Monroe (19-2, 6 KO) has not fought since last May, when he was stopped in the sixth round by Gennady Golovkin at The Forum in Inglewood, in a HBO main event. Prior to that, Monroe had won nine straight fights, including three bouts in the 2014 Boxcino middleweight tournament that was held on ESPN2's old-timey Friday Night Fights series. He followed that up with a January 2015 win over veteran Bryan Vera.
Thompson (17-2, 6 KO) was a late replacement entrant into the 2015 Boxcino junior middleweight tournament, also showcased on Friday Night Fights, and wound up winning his three bouts, which came after a 13-month layoff following a second round knockout loss to Frank Galarza in January 2014. He faced and lost to Liam Smith with the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on the line last October in Manchester, England, though he had a good showing prior to the seventh round stoppage loss.
The Showtime Extreme broadcast will also see 2015 Boxcino heavyweight tournament winner Andrey Fedosov (28-3, 23 KO) return to action, facing Mario Heredia (13-1, 11 KO), a 23-year-old from Mexico who sometimes weighs 230 pounds and sometimes weighs 290 pounds.
