Showtime Sports is promising an "exciting announcement" during a media conference call tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm EDT, and the first thing that leaps to mind is obvious: Floyd Mayweather may be returning to the ring and ending his "retirement."
Mayweather, 38, had his promotional company recently file for trademarks on "TMT 50" and "TBE 50," indicating that he may be coming back for his 50th pro fight, and what would be, if successful, his 50th victory. He stands at 49-0 (26 KO) following last September's win over Andre Berto.
With Showtime's boxing schedule pretty loaded right now, this seems like the only realistic possibility for something big that they could announce on Wednesday. It also lines up with the pattern in recent years of other major fighters making big announcements during major fight weeks, and we are in the middle of Canelo-Khan fight week right now. There are more eyes than normal on the sport, so it's an opportune time to make a big announcement.
The question if he is coming back would be, "Who does Floyd fight?" Danny Garcia is a possibility, Adrien Broner might be a possibility. We'll have to find out -- if, indeed, he's returning. (And all indications are pointing to him doing so.)
The other possibility is that Showtime could be announcing that they've signed Anthony Joshua to a long-term deal. That is less exciting. Or maybe it's not. But life is fleeting, let's wildly speculate.
