DiBella Entertainment officially announced this evening that the June 25 featherweight title fight between Jesus Cuellar and Abner Mares, set for a PBC on CBS card, has been canceled due to "a medical issue that renders (Mares) presently unable to fight in New York state."
The press release goes on to say that it’s not life-threatening, wasn’t revealed in a blood or urine test, and the cancellation has nothing to do with performance-enhancing drugs or any other banned substance. With respect to Mares’ medical confidentiality, no specifics are being announced other than the fight is canceled due to the medical problem.
The fight was set as the co-feature to the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter main event, and will be replaced on the card. Whether that means that Jesus Cuellar will fight someone else, or we’ll see one of the other fights bumped up hasn’t been announced. Jarrett Hurd-Oscar Molina, Regis Prograis-Luis Florez, and David Benavidez-Francy Ntetu are all scheduled for the card, and feature good prospects.
Mares, 30, last fought in August, losing a decision to Leo Santa Cruz.
