There was a lot of hype behind tonight's super featherweight title bout between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido, and the two warriors from Mexico delivered at the StubHub Center, throwing a metric ton of punches, landing bombs, and ultimately fighting to a majority draw in the HBO main event.
Vargas retains his WBC title on scores of 115-113 in his favor, and 114-114 from the other two judges. BLH also had the fight 114-114, as did HBO's Harold Lederman.
Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KO) and Salido (43-13-4, 30 KO) went back and forth throughout the fight, with Salido forcing Vargas into brawls, and Vargas holding his own. Neither man went down or was ever in serious trouble, which is a testament to the toughness and chin of both men, because there was plenty that landed hard. Both also attacked the body heavily, but neither man wilted, though both did show signs of fatigue at points, which is to be expected.
The CompuBox numbers were wild. Vargas landed 386 of 1,184 (33%) of his total punches, including 299 of 776 (39%) power punches. Salido landed 328 of 939 (35%) total punches, and 316 of 817 (39%) of his power shots.
This was, as advertised, an all-action fight that may be the early frontrunner for Fight of the Year, and I think a rematch would be welcomed warmly by everyone. How did you score it?
