Gennady Golovkin vs. Kell Brook won’t be the only title fight featuring a questionable English challenger on the September 10th card. Matchroom Boxing today announced that former amateur standout Charlie Edwards will challenge John Riel Casamero for the latter’s newly-acquired IBF flyweight title.
To say this is a step up for the twenty-three-year-old Edwards (7-0, 3 KO) would be putting it mildly. The Surrey native did, as mentioned, do well in the amateurs and he picked up the BBBofC flyweight title last year, but Casimero (22-3, 14 KO) is a legitimate world champion who decisively stopped one of the division’s best in Amnat Ruenroeng earlier this year.
Hell, Edwards is only ranked 14th by the IBF and is five days away from fighting TBA on the undercard of Giovanni de Carolis vs. Tyron Zeuge. It’s odd that Hearn and co. would throw him into the fire this early, although I suppose he’s young enough to rebound from a loss.
