This afternoon at 1:30 p.m. ET, Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook will formally announce their September 10 fight in London, with the press conference held in New York City.
Golovkin (35-0, 32 KO) had hoped to face Canelo Alvarez in September, but Alvarez instead chose to vacate the WBC middleweight title, and will now be facing Liam Smith on September 17 for Smith's WBO junior middleweight title. When Canelo was out of the discussion, Golovkin turned his attention to Chris Eubank Jr and a trip to London.
The Eubanks supposedly dragged their feet in negotiations, so Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn approached IBF welterweight titleholder Brook (36-0, 25 KO) with the same deal. Brook readily accepted, and thus a surprise fight was made. The fight has received, at best, a mixed reaction from critics, but it's what we've got all the same.
The fight will air on Sky Box Office in the United Kingdom, and on HBO in the United States, from the O2 Arena.
