Premier Boxing Champions returns to ESPN tonight at 9 p.m. ET with a doubleheader, featuring lightweight prospect Jamel Herring taking a big step up against contender Denis Shafikov in the 10-round main event.
Herring (15-0, 8 KO) was the captain of the U.S. men’s boxing team at London 2012, and turned pro after those Olympics. So far, he’s done very well, but at 30, the former Marine doesn’t have the youth many of his teammates have, and his rise up the ranks probably needs to come sooner than later.
Shafikov (36-2-1, 19 KO) is a former two-time title challenger, losing fights to Miguel Vazquez in 2014 and Rances Barthelemy last year. He remains a contender in the division, and Herring is looking to beat him to become one.
In the co-feature, Polish middleweight prospect Patryk Szymanski (15-0, 9 KO) will take on Wilky Campfort (21-2, 12 KO) in another 10-round fight.
We’ll be here with live coverage for both bouts, so join us this evening.

ROUND BY ROUND
JAMEL HERRING vs DENIS SHAFIKOV
Round 1: Not a whole lot going on in this round, both guys feeling it out. Shafikov the one coming forward, Herring pawing a bit with his jab, keeping range that Shafikov can't deal with well. Not a whole lot between them here. Herring 10-9
Round 2: Herring on his bike a little bit, not running but making Shafikov chase and miss a lot. Shafikov continuing to chase, not cutting off the ring terribly well, which is something of a surprise. Shafikov doing some work to the body. Shafikov landing some shots and DROPS HERRING AT THE END OF THE ROUND! Shafikov 10-8, 19-18
Round 3: Shafikov working hard now, going to the body, staying on Herring. Herring being made uncomfortable. Herring getting popped around a good deal in this round. Looks like a contender against a guy who isn't ready right now. Shafikov 10-9, 29-27
Round 4: Herring coming out with a bit more purpose on his punches this round. Shafikov just continuing to march forward. The pressure is just too much for Herring right now. Shafikov 10-9, 39-36
Round 5: Shafikov with a big flurry halfway into the round. He's just taking Herring apart. Herring is still trying, but he's getting beaten up and busted up by a better fighter. Shafikov 10-9, 49-45
Round 6: The action is about the same here. Teddy spends half the round asking Barry Hunter a question. Shafikov 10-9, 59-54
Round 7: Shafikov continuing to pretty much dominate this fight. Herring is alive and fighting, which is nice to see, but he's outclassed and being outfought. He's now cut near his right eye. Shafikov 10-9, 69-63
Round 8: There's also nothing really special about what Shafikov is doing. It's solid and effective but it's hardly elite level. And Herring really isn't close here. Again, still trying, still fighting, but just having a tough time here. Shafikov 10-9, 79-72
Round 9: Shafikov hammering away early in the round. His legs are going and SHafikov is looking to finish. Hook! Uppercuts! Body shots! Uppercut again! Herring being given a chance. Herring looks spent and defeated. He's bloodied, he's beaten, he's still on the defensive. Herring looks totally finished. Just won’t go down. This was an ugly round. Someone could've stopped this very easily. Shafikov 10-8, 89-80
Round 10: Shafikov lands an overhand left early and Herring's corner stops the fight. Shafikov TKO-10
PATRYK SZYMANSKI vs WILKY CAMPFORT
Round 1: Szymanski coming out looking to work behind his jab, Campfort feeling him out. Szymanski working head and body with the jab, but effectively to the head. Body jabs mostly just pokes to change eye level. Right hand coming in now and then behind Szymanski's jab. Campfort doing very little. Szymanski 10-9
Round 2: Szymanski continuing to dominate the pace here, jab, jab, jab, not pressing, just doing his work effectively. He's finding more chances to throw the right hand, too. Easy work so far for the prospect. Szymanski 10-9, 20-18
Round 3: More of the same in the first half of this round, but Camfport finally picks up his pace and actually attacks some down the stretch. That gets him clipped a couple times with hooiks and rights, but at least it's more entertaining. Szymanski 10-9, 30-27
Round 4: Good right hand from Szymanski staggers Campfort, and he's stalking a retreating Campfort now. Wilky trying to get his legs back, and may have. Szymanski stops the attack. Uppercut inside from Szymanski. Campfort trying to muscle Szymanski a bit, not working great, but he's coming forward. Left hook and right hand again from Szymanski. He's outclassing Campfort pretty badly thus far. Right hand Szymanski, and HEY! Wilky lands a right hand. Szymanski 10-9, 40-36
Round 5: Szymanski sticking with the basics, and doing it pretty well. Campfort occasionally landing a shot. Right hand from Campfort again, and he might have some momentum late here in the round. Campfort with a good hook, and closes the round with another shot. Campfort 10-9, Szymanski 49-46
Round 6: Wilky's starting to find something here. He's able to land more, and Szymanski's defense is slipping, and his head movement isn't there. Szymanski gets popped good, and then tries to fire back with a flurry. Uppercut inside from Szymanski, and now we've got a fight on our hands. Both guys grinding inside. Campfort spending too many stretches not throwing. Campfort looking to the body now. Trade of uppercuts. Fun round. Campfort 10-9, Szymanski 58-56
Round 7: Szymanski picking and pecking, keeping himself out of range a bit more. Campfort throwing to the body when Szymanski is close enough. Jab jab jab from Szymanski. Fairly close round, but I thought Szymanski did more effective work. Szymanski 10-9, 68-65
Round 8: Campfort with some nice body work again this round. But Szymanski still doing the more consistent work overall. Campfort does fine in spurts, but has lulls. Szymanski 10-9, 78-74
Round 9: The fight has its pace now, has for a while. It has slowed some, understandably. But Szymanski has this in the bag if he doesn't blow it. Szymanski 10-9, 88-83
Round 10: Getting a little scrappy here halfway into the round, with Szymanski hiting on the break and Campfort milking it for all it's worth. Referee could take a point. I mean it was a foul either way. Referee does not take a point. Szymanski out and throwing, warned about going low with body shots. Campfort complaining about a rabbit punch. Szymanski closing this round and the fight hard. And then he coasts the last 30 seconds or so. Szymanski 10-9, 98-92
