Day seven of the boxing in Rio is off and running, and we’ve got one gold medal match set!
Note: The NBC stream was a mess during the women’s fights to open the morning, which is why there’s a lack of detail for these fights.
Women’s flyweight (51kg) - Round of 16
- Tetyana Kob (Ukraine) def. Stanimira Petrova (Bulgaria)
- Mandy Bujold (Canada) def. Yodgoroy Mirzaeva (Uzbekistan)
Kob will take on Nicola Adams, the top seed from Great Britain and 2012 gold medalist. Bujold will face Cancan Ren of China.
Women’s lightweight (60kg) - Round of 16
- Mira Potkonen (Finland) def. Adriana Araújo (Brazil)
- Junhua Yin (China) def. Hasnaa Lachgar (Morocco)
Potkonen now faces top seed and 2012 gold medalist Katie Taylor of Ireland, and Yin moves on to face Azerbaijan’s Yana Alekseevna of Azerbaijan.
Men’s light flyweight (49kg) - Semifinals
- Yurberjen Martinez (Colombia) def. Joahyns Argilagos (Cuba)
- Hasanboy Dusmatov (Uzbekistan) def. Nico Hernandez (United States)
Men’s lightweight (60kg) - Quarterfinals
Lázaro Álvarez (Cuba) def. Carlos Balderas (United States)
Back-to-back losses for a couple of good American stories from Rio, and neither fighter has a thing to be ashamed of, as they both lost to world class fighters, and gave a great effort in defeat. Balderas has the look of a pro prospect, and you can bet every American promoter will be in touch with him soon enough. Álvarez advances on, and is guaranteed at least a bronze
Robson Conceiçāo (Brazil) def. Hurshid Tojibaev (Uzbekistan)
Of the Brazilian fighters in Rio, Conceiçāo is the best, and is also guaranteed at least a bronze now. He reportedly plans to turn pro after this. He’s 27, but there’s still some good years left, and he’s got a legitimate chance to beat Álvarez in the semifinal, too. Being at home won’t hurt, either.
Men’s middleweight (75kg) - Round of 16
Arlen López (Cuba) def. Zoltán Harcsa (Hungary)
This was a massive KO, the truest pure knockout we’ve seen in Rio thus far, coming just before the end of the first round. There’s a reason López is the gold medal favorite, and we saw it here.

Christian Mbilli (France) def. Marlo Delgado (Ecuador)
A really tough fight here, but Mbilli deserved the win, which was a split decision, 2-1 on each card, two for Mbilli, one for Delgado. He’s got a date in the quarterfinal with López now, which looks positively frightening after today, but Mbilli is a sturdy, strong guy, so it could be interesting.
Zhanilek Alimkhanuly (Kazakhstan) def. Ilyas Abbadi (Algeria)
Alimkhanuly dominated Great Britain’s Anthony Fowler in the round of 32, and did pretty much the same to Ilyas Abbadi of Algeria in this fight. He’s a very good, very smart fighter, physically quite strong, and looks like a serious contender so far.
