Antonio Margarito splits Ramon Alvarez, Roy Jones Jr. sweeps Rodney Moore

With the Olympics in full swing, pro boxing promoters have wisely kept this weekend free of any significant action. That’s not to say the field was totally barren but, well, it’s 2016 and we’re discussing Antonio Margarito.

It’s a living.

Anyway, the fine folks at World Boxing News did a roundup of last night’s few attractions. For those of you too lazy to click the link, I’ll summarize.

The One-Eyed Wonder picked up a split decision over Ramon Alvarez in what was apparently a pretty solid fight. Despite his orbital once again refusing to play nice with the rest of his face, Margarito (40-8, 27 KO) scored a knockdown and did enough damage to win 97-92 on two scorecards, the third a 95-94 for Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KO).

The win was Margarito’s second after a four-year layoff.

Over in Pensacola, someone finally managed to wake Roy Jones Jr. up from his knockout loss to Enzo Maccarinelli, presumably with a pungent combination of smelling salts and ground-up cruiserweight belts, and throw him in against an overweight forty-year-old. Jones (64-9, 46 KO) won all ten rounds against Rodney Moore (17-12-2, 7 KO), whose ten-fight losing streak includes lasting about five minutes before getting swatted like a fly by Murat Gassiev.

Across various ponds, Edis Tatli and Blake Capparello picked up wins as well.

Things pick up a bit next week with Errol Spence Jr. vs. Leonard Bundu, so that’s something at least.
