Roy Jones Jr. tears bicep, admits career might be over

It was a bittersweet weekend for Roy Jones Jr. He cruised to a easy win over journeyman Rodney Moore in his hometown of Pensacola but suffered a torn right bicep in the process, which may finally mark the end of his Hall of Fame career. In the dressing room following the fight Jones was emotional as he reflected back on his career, knowing that this might finally be over for good.

"It may have been the last one," said Jones, afterward in a crowded dressing room of supporters at the Bay Center. "And I'm not mad if it is, because I had a great time. All my kids got to see daddy fight one more time. Everybody in Pensacola got to see Roy fight one more time."

But as always, Jones remains defiant that the ultimate decision whether or not he'll retire will be made by him, and him alone. He is fully aware that he can't carry on fighting forever, but he's becoming increasingly willing to admit that the end is near.

"I know it's getting close to the end. It's a matter of time, matter of how I can heal and I hold up."

"My clock is winding down. When you start seeing injuries like this, that's telling you that you're getting older."

The fact is, for most hardcore boxing fans, Jones' career effectively ended about 10 years ago. Sure, he's fought about 20 times since then, but most if not all of those have been considered to be little more than novelty fights against lesser tier opposition -- with Jones just a shell of his former self. And even in a few of those fights Jones has been brutally knocked out. It hasn't always been pretty. In fact, sometimes it was downright scary to see the legend in such vulnerable states.

But only Jones himself can decide when enough is enough, and it looks like we're headed towards that eventuality. If Jones were to hang up the gloves now it might be under the best circumstances possible, with him coming off a win in front of his hometown fans.
