It's official - lightweights Richard Commey and Robert Easter Jr. will fight on Sept. 9 at the Santander Arena in Reading, PA for the vacant IBF title. Easter Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) has earned his title shot with a series of knockout wins, including most recently stopping Argenis Mendez in five rounds back in April.
Commey (24-0, 22 KOs) is also coming off a string of stoppage wins, as he most recently stopped Anzor Gamgebeli in two rounds this past March. And now with a shot at a world title on the line, Commey is understandably excited for the opportunity as he tells RingTV.
"This opportunity means everything to me, (after) all the hard work my team and I have put in over the last six years. This is what we started out to achieve and, when I win, it will be a great feeling to know we have reached our goal."
Then, speaking on his opponent, Commey says that he knows what Easter brings to the table, but that he'll be fully prepared come fight night.
"I think he's a very good boxer and I have the upmost respect for him as I do all my opponents, but that won't count for nothing as soon as the first bell rings," says Commey. ‘'Patience is the key, and as long as I stay focused and listen to my corner I'll be fine."
The problem that most lightweights will have with Easter Jr. is that he's basically a six-foot lightweight who is technically sound with pretty good power at the weight. He height and reach have served him well thus far in his young career and so long as he has no issues hitting 135lbs, he should continue wreaking havoc on the division for the foreseeable future.
Commey, though, should prove to be a tough test for Easter. So really this is just a good fight between two undefeated contenders -- the way it should be.
You tell me, fans. Who do you like in this one?
