The 2014 ESPN prospect of the year Felix Verdejo was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after he was involved in an motorcycle accident in Puerto Rico. Although Verdejo has suffered head trauma and a number of cuts, he is said to be in stable condition as reported by ESPN.com.
"He's being treated for head trauma and lacerations to the face, head and his whole left arm, and he is in stable condition," Carl Moretti of Top Rank, Verdejo's promoter, told ESPN.com. "They have him sedated.
"We are waiting for further details on his condition. There is no reason to speculate on anything. Our prayers are with him, and we are hoping he makes a speedy recovery."
The 23-year-old rising star was eyeing a lightweight title shot at against Terry Flanagan as his mandatory challenger and was in negotiations to make it happen as Manny Pacquiao's co-feature this November -- but now all that would appear to be on hold for a bit.
Verdejo has been billed as Puerto Rico's next big boxing star, but has already suffered from chronic hand injuries and a couple of less-than-thrilling performances in the past year. Obviously this accident isn't any better news, but luckily at his tender age it would seem that time is still on his side. Here's hoping to a full and speedy recovery.
