Fresh off a weekend that saw each fighter pick up a stoppage victory, the World Boxing Association has ordered "Super" Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin to face regular Champion Danny Jacobs within 120 days.
The teams have 30 days to negotiate, after which there will be a purse bid.
Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO), who out-slugged a very game Kell Brook in London this past Saturday for his twenty-third consecutive finish, called out WBO titlist Billy Joe Saunders for a unification bout afterwards. I’m quite certain Saunders has no issue with that fight being bumped back.
"GGG" has held a WBA belt for six years, Super title for two of them.
Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO), BoxRec’s number-two in the division, battered Sergio Mora into submission on Friday in an unnecessary rematch of their two-round 2015 showdown. He picked up the WBA belt Golovkin left behind with a knockout of Jerrod Fletcher and has scored twelve consecutive stoppages since getting knocked into the Twilight Zone by Dmitry Pirog in 2010.
Here’s hoping they actually manage to cobble this one together.
