Willie Monroe Jr was too slick and too quick tonight for Gabriel Rosado, winning a unanimous decision over the tough Philly veteran on scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 118-110. BLH had it 117-111 for Monroe.
Monroe (21-2, 6 KO) was caught here and there by Rosado (23-10, 13 KO), but overall was able to outclass his opponent, sticking and moving, popping him with jabs, and outlanding Rosado by a considerable margin.
The win for Monroe, 29, may set up a December date with Canelo Alvarez, if Alvarez is successful this evening against Liam Smith. This fight was advertised as a potential audition for an Alvarez bout in three months on HBO.
Monroe landed 33% (120/362) of his total punches in an economical, defense-first performance, outpacing Rosado’s 63 of 416 (15%). Monroe landed 56 of 175 (32%) jabs, with Rosado at just 9% (15/166). For power punches, Monroe landed 34% (64/187) compared to 19% (48/250) for Rosado.
