One man's loss is another man's gain...After news broke that Canelo Alvarez suffered a thumb fracture in his win over Liam Smith, forcing him out for the rest of the year, HBO now has some money to play with which could potentially set up a big fight between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs before the year is out. ESPN is reporting that Golovkin will take over Canelo's Dec. 10th date, likely at Madison Square Garden.
"That was Canelo's date and we're shooting for that date now for GGG," Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions told ESPN.com on Thursday night.
Golovkin, who has been ordered to make a mandatory title defense against "regular" titilist Daniel Jacobs, has also been confirmed to have already begun negotiations with Jacobs, according to the WBA. And with Loeffler having recently negotiated a deal with Al Haymon (who advises Jacobs) to stage the Golovkin-Wade fight, there's no reason to think a deal can't be struck here.
"Hopefully, we can work out the details soon for Jacobs," Loeffler said.
Both camps have until mid-October to come to a deal otherwise the fight will be ordered to purse bid. Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) is most recently coming off a 5th round stoppage over Kell Brook while Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) is coming off a 7th round stoppage over Sergio Mora just a couple weeks ago.
