Ring magazine has just unveiled their full list of award winners for 2016 and featherweight champion Carl Frampton earned the nod as Fighter of the Year. It was a very close race with a number of deserving candidates, but Frampton’s big win over domestic rival Scott Quigg before moving up to featherweight to beat champion Leo Santa Cruz was enough to earn him the nod.
“I had an amazing year last year,” Frampton said. “I unified at 122 and moved up and fought a great fighter at featherweight in Leo Santa Cruz. The year went pretty much to plan. It couldn’t have went better.”
As for some of the other notable RING awards: Francisco Vargas vs. Orlando Salido won Fight of the Year; Canelo Alvarez sparking Amir Khan won Knockout of the Year; Joe Smith Jr. vs. Andrzej Fonfara won Upset of the Year; Andre Ward won Comeback of the Year; Erickson Lubin won Prospect of the Year; and the late Arnulfo Obando won Trainer of the Year for his work with Roman Gonzalez.
