Gamboa (25-1, 17 KO), an Olympic gold medalist whose prodigious talent is matched only by his ability to sabotage his own career, earned a meh decision over Hylon Williams Jr. two Decembers ago in just his second fight since losing to Terence Crawford in June of 2014. Now 35, he hasn’t fought more than twice in a calendar year since 2010.
Alvarado (24-7, 15 KO) is a bit better than his record would suggest, as evidenced by his war with Joseph Diaz Jr. and recent split decision over the free-falling Jayson Velez. At the very least, he’s aggressive and durable enough to make the oft-passive Gamboa scrap.
You can catch this fight and the main event on HBO After Dark.
