If anyone thought this might end up as a mismatch — it was. Mikey Garcia came out in full control early, showcasing his superior boxing ability which quickly neutralized an aggressive Dejan Zlaticanin.
Garcia was able to use his height, reach, and footwork to repeatedly pepper Zlaticanin with jabs until he uncorked a monster right uppercut in the third round that badly stunned Zlaticanin, and then followed that up with another monster right hook which knocked Zlaticanin out cold.
Ladies and gentlemen, we already have a solid knockout of the year candidate for 2017.
Truth be told, it was actually a pretty scary scene. Zlaticanin laid motionless on the mat for several minutes while medical staff came rushing to his aid. Mikey Garcia showed a lot of respect and concern for Zlaticanin as he laid unconscious, but Zlaticanin would eventually come to and Mikey Garcia repeatedly thanked him for the opportunity to fight for the world title.
Mikey Garcia is the new WBC lightweight world champion, which marks the third division he’s now earned a world title. In the post-fight interview Garcia said that he’s back on the scene and that he’s looking to unify titles with any other lightweight champion out there.
