Miguel Berchelt upset Francisco Vargas last night on HBO to win the WBC super featherweight title, outboxing and outfighting the defending champion in a fantastic offensive performance that saw accuracy trump output.
Berchelt (31-1, 28 KO) seemed to have Vargas’ number from the start, and Vargas (23-1-2, 17 KO) was never able to find the sort of heroic comeback we’ve seen from him in the past.
This was an entertaining fight, but by the end had become a beatdown, with Vargas a bloody mess, and Berchelt firmly in control, forcing the referee to finally stop the bout in round 11.
Takashi Miura outlasted Mickey Roman in a brutal two-way war, wearing him down and dropping him in the 10th and 11th rounds, before knocking him out early in the 12th and final round. Miura (31-3-2, 24 KO) had to stage something of a rally in the fight, as the middle rounds saw Roman (56-12, 43 KO) seemingly taking over to a degree, busting Miura up pretty badly in the process.
Miura may now be in line to face Berchelt for the WBC belt, which Miura lost in 2015 to Vargas in the Fight of the Year.
If you missed this one, here are the highlights, but catch a replay on HBO. This was an early Fight of the Year candidate.
