Roman Gonzalez vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai set for March 18th

Sor Rungvisai is the mandatory challenger for Gonzalez's WBC belt.

According to multiple sources, including Mexico’s NotiFight and Nicaragua’s El Nuevo Diario, WBC president Mauricio Suleiman yesterday confirmed that super flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez will defend his belt against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on March 18th.

As has become tradition, it will serve as the co-feature for Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs at Madison Square Garden.

Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KO) had been pursuing a rematch with Carlos Cuadras, from whom he took his belt in September, but disagreements over money appear to have sunk that ship. Instead, he gets Sor Rungvisai (41-4-1, 38 KO), the organization’s #2 and Scott’s #7 for the division.

Sor Rungvisai has just one loss since 2010, a technical decision against Cuadras in 2014, but has also maintained a very Thai schedule in that span; almost a quarter of his opponents since his third pro loss have been debuting fighters, including his last two. That said, he did crush Jose Salgado in 2015 and has at least destroyed the assorted tomato cans as he should.

Oleksandr Usyk is also in line to join the pay-per-view undercard against an opponent to be named.
